A
culture rich in the arts, the Balinese and Javanese have a
long tradition of puppetry. Wayang Purwa is a form of theatre.
It is a mime of the ethical teaching inherent in Indonesian
culture and is a medium of communication. This art dates back
to the 9th century. The word "wayang" means shadow,
while "purwa" means ancient. Wayang Purwa is a shadow
show for which the ancient Ramayana and Mahabharata form the
repertoire. The shadows are cast on a white screen by flat
buffalo hide leather puppets that are stiffened by horn handles
and manipulated by a puppeteer, the "dalang." The
shadows that flicker on the screen make the puppets come alive;
while the voices, the music, and the knocking sounds from
behind the screen conjure an eerie effect as the gods and
men fight to overcome trickery and evil doing. The stories
are both entertainment and protection against the spirits.
While you are in the audience, the spirits cannot get at you.
Two full collections, each of 165 puppets,
were acquired in the field by Rhoda Lurie and have been exhibited
in museums across the country. |
