Traditional
textiles are widely recognized as among the greatest artistic achievements
of Indonesia. They are indeed the chief
form of artistic expression throughout almost all of the archipelago,
playing a central role in many of the rituals associated with life
passages birth, initiation, marriage and death. Their content,
technique and materials reflect a diversity of cultural incursions,
religions, political systems, social and practical needs.
Textiles are emblems of prestige, rank and wealth; are connected with
trade and gift exchanges; foster fertility; are symbols of agricultural
productivity and seasonal renewal; and become a medium of communication
with the supernatural world.
This selection of textiles from Indonesia were collected in the field
by Rhoda Lurie of RhoDesigns in the 1980s and have been exhibited
in museums and galleries in the Midwest. They come from the islands
of Sumatra and Timor. |
