Guatemala
is a nation with lush tropical vegetation. The colors of flowers
and fruits are enjoyed year round. The highlands of Guatemala have
been inhabited by Maya Indians since the early Preclassic Period
(2500-1300). The descendants of these Indians of Maya-Quiche linguistic
stock still live in small villages. A definite social structure
exists and is visually expressed in the different attire. The production
of textiles is a living art based on custom and tradition.
The "huipil" collection from RhoDesigns includes examples
from San Juan and San Pedro Sacatecapequez, Solola, Aquas Calientes,
Santiago Atitlan, San Andres Xecul, Chichicastenango, San Pedro,
Nebaj, Nahuaola, Patzun and Almolongo.
All these pieces were collected in the field by Rhoda Lurie in the
early 1980's and have been exhibited in museums and galleries in
the mid-west.
