BOTSWANA
BASKETS
|
| Baskets
have been woven and used by women in Africa for centuries. The basket-making
people, whom I have studied, are all Bantu-speaking; have a long tradition
of basket weaving and are rural people, originating from different
cultures. The Bayei, the largest of the basket makers living in Ngamiland,
a northeastern region of land-locked Botswana, utilize their environment
skillfully; they are masters of the river, fish and collect water
roots, and use the indigenous reeds and other flora in making necessary
items for everyday use. |

| The
flared bowl, suitably shaped to meet the functions of the agricultural
activities of rural people, varies in width, depth, size and design.
The flared woven baskets are used by women for winnowing; that is,
for allowing the wind to blow away the chaff and impurities. These
containers are also used for finely ground flour or for carrying fruits
and vegetables from the fields. |

All
these baskets were collected in the field and have been exhibited
in museums.
