BLANKETS from NAGALAND, BURMA
Nagaland is an area in the northeast part of India,
and the northwest part of Myanmar (Burma). Nagas are descendants
from Tibet and there are more than 29 different groups in
Myanmar alone. In January 2004 I attended a festival in the
mountaneous Layshe area. It was the fourth annual New Year
Naga Festival where a series of spectaular dance performances
took place and was attended by hundreds of chanting Naga tribesmen
wearing traditional clothing and headdresses made of hornbill
feathers. Women, dressed in colorful beaded necklaces and
costumes of hand woven blankets and fabrics, danced and sang
traditional songs.
