| Once
married, Zulu women wear a distinctive headdress to indicate their
status. These elaborate red-ochered headdresses are somewhat of a
permanent coiffure. Married women alone may wear these and the style
shown is distinctive from the Tugela Ferry, KwaZulu. These women use
wooden headrests as pillows for sleeping. |

these headrests were acquired in the field by Rhoda Lurie and are
highly collectible.
